MUSIC - GONG MATRICES : PARADE

PARADE CD

VOICEPRINT VP 353 CD

The GONG MATRICES band grew spontaneously out of a "let's just do it" jam between Gilli Smyth of Gong and some of the Azigza band musicians, at the l999 San Francisco Prog Festat which Gilli performed with Pierce, Arieh and Stephen of the Bay Area ensemble AZIGZA and James (Jettarura, Grassy Knoll,Mr Bungle and Air). Due to the overhelming positive reponse, they have reunited to o a number of gigs. The band developed through various San Francisco, Woodstock, New York gigs and recordings finalised in September 2OO3 by Mark Pistel at Lo-Fi Studios, San Francisco. These recordings are a culmination of those original performances with new lyrics. Gilli's spacey sound reminds of Gong, and Mother Gong, as do her pointed lyrics, somewhat political, but here in a very different context, augmented by the excellent bass sound of Pierce McDowell, who wrote the music. Floating, eerie or seductive sounds are enhanced by the electric violin, quirky synthesiser, and sharp percussion.
